Installing LibreOffice on your Virtual Machine

LibreOffice is a free and open-source office suite, that consists of several applications:

  • Writer for word processing
  • Calc for creating and editing spreadsheets

  • Draw for making vector graphics and flowcharts
  • Base for working with databases
  • Math for composing mathematical formulas

LibreOffice is the default office suite for Linux distributions but it is also available for Windows.

Installing LibreOffice on a Linux Virtual Machine

1. Install LibreOffice

Connect to the Linux Virtual Machine and open the terminal. The LibreOffice suite is then easily installed using the Ubuntu package manager:

sudo apt-get install libreoffice -y

2. Start LibreOffice application

Once the installation is complete, you should be able to find LibreOffice tools under ApplicationsOffice.

It is worth noting that LibreOffice is a single-threaded application, meaning it is limited to using one CPU when doing calculations, even if others are available. This can lead to the application running slowly with very large data files or potentially crashing if the calculations become too complex.

Installing LibreOffice on a Windows Virtual Machine

1. Download the newest distribution

Because VM access to the Internet is restricted, you will need to do this step on your own computer. Navigate to the LibreOffice distributions page and download the latest Windows 64 bit distribution.

2. Upload to Files

In the Aridhia DRE Workspace, if you don't have an uploads folder already, create a new one by going into the Files tab and pressing on New Folder. Name your folder uploads.

Next, navigate to the Files tab and open your uploads folder. From here, press the Upload tab -> Upload files or data. Upload your LibreOffice installation file ( *.exe) here. More information about uploading files can be found on the Uploading files via the Workspace page.

3. Install LibreOffice

Connect to the Windows Virtual Machine and navigate to the uploads folder. Double click on the executable, and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Once LibreOffice is installed, you should find the office suite applications in the Start menu.
