FAIR Data Sources

When creating a catalogue entry in FAIR the data owner is required to select a data source for their dataset. This article explains what a data source is, and what the current options are.

Each metadata record in the FAIR catalogue has a data source. The data source is the location where the actual data associated with the catalogue entry is held. Data owners can choose to host the data in FAIR, in one of the supported external database types, or to associate the metadata record with a deployed Federated Node.

When creating a dataset they are required to select the data source for their dataset:

The table below provides more detail on the available options:

Data source Description
Managed by FAIR

Data for the catalogue entry is ingested into FAIR and held in the FAIR database. Copies are transferred to a workspace on request.

When this hosting option has been selected the data owner cannot subsequently change it.

Postgres SQL Service Data for the catalogue entry is held in an external Postgres SQL database and mapped to the catalogue entry. Copies are transferred to a workspace on request.
Azure SQL Database Service Data for the catalogue entry is held in an external Azure SQL  database and mapped to the catalogue entry. Copies are transferred to a workspace on request.
Azure Synapse SQL Data for the catalogue entry is held in an external Azure Synapse SQL database and mapped to the catalogue entry. Copies are transferred to a workspace on request.
Federated Node The data is available for federated analysis via a Federated Node. This is mapped to the catalogue entry and an auth token for interaction with the node is transferred to a workspace on request.
